Three Rector Candidates Compete for the Highest Leadership Position at USU for the 2021–2026 Period

MEDAN – HUMAS USU: The Academic Senate of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held a plenary meeting with the single agenda of the Screening of Rector Candidates of Universitas Sumatera Utara for the 2021–2026 Period, which took place at the Pancasila Building of USU on Thursday (26/11/2020). The plenary meeting, attended by 100 members of the Academic Senate, selected three candidates from the four rector candidates who had previously participated in an audition at the USU Auditorium on Tuesday (24/11/2020).
The meeting was opened offline by the Chair of the Academic Senate, Prof. Dr. Suwarto, S.H., M.H., at 09:00 WIB. The Chair of the USU Rector Candidate Election Committee, Prof. dr. Guslihan, Sp.A(K), invited three members of the Academic Senate who had been appointed during the Academic Senate Plenary Meeting on November 13, 2020, to serve as witnesses in the screening process, namely Prof. Erlina, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., Ak., Saharman Gea, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D., and Dr. Dudut Tanjung, S.Kp., M.Kep., Sp.KMB.
Through a press conference held on Thursday (26/11/2020) afternoon at the lobby of the USU Central Administration Bureau, the Rector of USU, Prof. Dr. Runtung Sitepu, S.H., M.Hum., explained that there were 101 members of the USU Senate who were supposed to cast their votes; however, one member was ill, resulting in 100 members being present to vote. The vote tally in the plenary meeting was as follows: 52 votes for Prof. Dr. dr. Farhat, M.Ked.(ORL-HNS), Sp.THT-KL(K); 37 votes for Dr. Muryanto Amin, M.Si.; and 11 votes for Prof. Dr. M. Arif Nasution, M.A. Meanwhile, one candidate from outside USU, Dr. Restu Utama Pencawan, did not receive any votes (withdrew).
Subsequently, the USU Rector Election Committee will immediately submit the three names of the USU rector candidates to the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemendikbud) for the next stage. In accordance with the USU Statute and Government Regulations, the candidates ranked first to third based on the number of votes will be submitted to Jakarta. Following this, the election will take place in Jakarta according to the schedule on December 3, 2020.
Taking place in Jakarta on December 3, 2020, the three rector candidates will be elected by 21 members of the USU Board of Trustees (Majelis Wali Amanat / MWA), consisting of 8 representatives from the USU Academic Senate, 10 representatives from the Community, the incumbent Rector of USU, the Governor of North Sumatra, and the Minister of Education and Culture, Nadiem Anwar Makarim. The Minister of Education and Culture will hold the largest voting right, amounting to 35 percent.
The Rector of USU expressed hope that the entire election process would proceed smoothly according to the schedule. “After December 3, the elected Rector of USU who will succeed me will be known, and this is part of the leadership regeneration at USU. I guarantee that the implementation of this process will involve no cheating whatsoever, and everything will proceed properly without any intervention,” said Prof. Runtung. (RJ)
