USU Rector Selection 2021 - 2026

USU will conduct a new rector election for the 2021-2026 period. The screening stage will be carried out by the Academic Senate on November 26, 2020. Meanwhile, the USU Board of Trustees (MWA) is conducting the election stage on December 03, 2020.

ACADEMIC SENATE: In connection with the end of the term of office of the USU Rector, Prof. Dr. Runtung, S.H., M.Hum. on January 21, 2021. USU will conduct a new rector election for the 2021-2026 period. The USU Rector Screening Committee, Prof. Dr. Guslihan Dasa Tjipta, Sp.A (K) said that the screening stages include registration activities, return of forms, administrative selection, announcement of candidates who pass administrative selection, and auditions. The screening stage was held on November 26, 2020, where the USU Academic Senate carried out this activity. Meanwhile, the USU Board of Trustees (MWA) is conducting the election stage on December 03, 2020.

 

Based on Government Regulation No. 16 of 2014 Article 29, paragraph (2) and paragraph (3), the general requirements set to become a candidate for USU Rector are not yet 60 years old at the time of being inaugurated as rector. Indonesian citizens are physically and mentally healthy, have high integrity, commitment, and leadership, have broad insight into higher education, have a minimum Doctoral education (S-3), and have never been convicted of a criminal offense with a minimum prison sentence of 4 years. In addition, special requirements are also stipulated by the MWA regulations, namely, having the spirit of Pancasila, being physically and mentally / spiritually healthy as stated by a Doctor's Certificate from the USU Teaching Hospital, having good morals and ethics, having managerial experience, especially in higher education, being able to translate the vision and mission of the university and being willing and committed to implementing the University Strategic Plan in its work program.

 

On November 18, 2020, according to the scheduling plan, the USU Rector Candidate Screening Committee for the 2021-2026 Period officially closed the Registration and Submission of Completeness Files for USU Rector Candidates for the 2021-2026 Period. This was conveyed by the Head of the USU Rector Candidate Selection Committee for the 2021-2026 Period, Prof. Dr. Guslihan Dasa Tjipta SpA (K), to the media on Thursday (11/19/2020).

 

Until the registration was closed on Tuesday, November 17, 2020, at 24.00 WIB, 6 people took and returned the registration form to the USU Rector Candidate Screening Committee for the 2021-2026 Period: Prof. Dr. dr. Farhat, M.Ked (ORL-HNS), Sp.THT-KL(K), Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos, M.Si, Prof. Dr. M. Arif Nasution, MA, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Fidel Ganis Siregar, M.Ked (OG), Sp.OG(K), Dr. Restu Utama Pencawan, S.H., M.Pd., Dr. M. Sontang Sihotang, S.Si, M.Si.

 

On Thursday (11/26/2020), The Academic Senate of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held a plenary meeting with the sole agenda of Screening Candidates for Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara for the 2021-2026 Period held at the Pancasila Building of USU. The plenary meeting, which 100 members of the Academic Senate attended, selected 3 candidates from 4 rector candidates who had auditioned at the USU Auditorium on Tuesday (24/11/2020).

The meeting was opened offline by the Chair of the USU Academic Senate, Prof. Dr. Suwarto, SH, MH, at 09:00 WIB. Chairman of the USU Rector Candidate Selection Committee, Prof dr Guslihan, Sp A (K), invited 3 (three) SA members who had been elected at the Academic Senate Plenary Meeting on November 13, 2020, to witness the screening, namely Prof Erlina, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., Ak., Saharman Gea, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D. and Dr. Dudut Tanjung, S.Kp., M.Kep., Sp. KMB.

 

The votes in the plenary meeting were 52 votes for Prof. Dr. dr. Farhat, M.Ked. (ORL-HNS), Sp. THT-KL (K), 37 votes for Dr. Muryanto Amin, M.Si., and 11 votes for Prof. Dr. M Arif Nasution, M.A. Meanwhile, one candidate from outside USU, Dr. Restu Utama Pencawan, did not get any votes (resigned).

 

Furthermore, the three rector candidates will follow the final Rector Election process by the Board of Trustees (MWA) on Thursday (03/12/2020) in Jakarta. The three Rector candidates will be elected by 21 members of the USU Board of Trustees (MWA), consisting of 8 representatives from the USU Academic Senate, 10 representatives of the Community Elements, the incumbent USU Rector, the Governor of North Sumatra and the Minister of Education and Culture, Nadiem Anwar Makarim. The Minister of Education and Culture will have the most voting rights, 35 percent.

 

The election and determination session conducted by the USU Board of Trustees at the Ministry of Education office (Higher Education Building) in Jakarta on Thursday (3/12/2020) appointed Dr. Muryanto Amin as USU Rector for the 2021-2026 period. Dr. Muryanto Amin received the most votes, 18 votes (57.75%), by outperforming his competitors, Prof. Farhat with 11 votes (35.75), and Prof. Muhammad Arif with 2 votes (6.5).

Also present were Directorate General of Higher Education Muhammad Nizam, representing the Minister of Education and Culture, Regional Secretary of North Sumatra Sabrina, representing the Governor, and all other MWA members.

 

After the election, the Head of MWA USU, Kartini Sjahrir Panjaitan, congratulated the new USU rector, Muryanto Amin, who will replace Prof. Runtung Sitepu. "Hopefully, USU will be better under the leadership of Muryanto Amin," she said.

 

Dr. Muryanto Amin, in his brief statement, thanked the MWA for conducting this rector election well and smoothly. Dr. Muryanto Amin, Dean of Fisip USU, also invited the entire academic community (leaders, lecturers, staff, and students) of USU to continue to work together to build USU in the future. "In the future, our task will be even harder because we have to maintain what has been achieved by the previous leadership and even improve more," he said.
